A question I am often asked as a sex therapist is 'Who goes for Psychosexual Therapy?' And what type of sex problems do they normally need help with.
People of all ages and all sexual orientation, those who are in relationships and those who are not come for sex therapy. You might wonder if a person is not in a relationship why they might seek psychosexual supports. The reasons that they are not in a relationship might be because of a sexual problem that they have, and it may be blocking them from either pursuing or maintaining an intimate relationship.
Depending on the issue people either seek psychosexual supports on their own or as part of a couple. At different stages of their lives women will often find penetration difficult (Vaginismus) or find sex to be painful or have an inability to orgasm. For males it can be related to erectile difficulties such as premature or delayed ejaculation problems or general performance issues. Other common problems include poor sexual desire or arousal issues which can often result in relationship problems.
Some of these issues may have a physical cause that will first need to be out ruled by a GP, but in many cases, there will be a psychological reason that can be freely discussed and safely managed through psychosexual therapy.
Psychosexual therapy also specialises in helping couples overcome a variety sexual related concerns which can range from problems with past traumas or low libido or mismatched libidos. In many relationships the frequency and excitement around sex wains, and couples get into a routine of boring or scheduled sex or a complete absence of it. The goal here might be to restore intimacy in their relationship and seek out a better emotional and physical connection.
Sex matters and overcoming sexual problems and investing into our sex lives has many positive benefits for both individuals and couples. Psychosexual therapy is a safe space and psychosexual therapists are broad minded individuals who can help you overcome all types of sexual issues.
